The History of Freedom and Other Essays- Lord Acton

John Emerich Edward Dalberg-Acton, 1st Baron Acton was a 19th century English Catholic historian, writer, and politician. Though Acton never completed his History of Liberty, he did complete several essays of the history of freedom. He was a primary influence of Friedrich von Hayek’s. Acton took particular interest in the United States, believing its federalist structure was the best system for protecting individual rights.

Acton famously wrote “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.”
