7. The Keating Five

The Keating Five were the 5 US Senators who intervened to prevent Charles Keating Jr, Chairman of the Lincoln Savings and Loan Association, from being audited in exchange for campaign funds. The five senators – Alan Cranston (Democrat of California), Dennis DeConcini (Democrat of Arizona), John Glenn (Democrat of Ohio), John McCain (Republican of Arizona), and Donald W. Riegle, Jr. (Democrat of Michigan), all served the remainders of their terms, though the scandal became a part of the larger Savings and Loan crises of the 80’s and 90’s. John McCain went on to run for US President twice, securing his party’s nomination in 2008.
