25. George Eastman 1854-1932
“What we do during our working hours determines what we have; what we do in our leisure hours determines what we are.”
George Eastman was an American inventor, photographer, and entrepreneur. Eastman founded the Eastman Kodak Company, famously known as Kodak, where he worked to advance and popularize roll film. Roll film not only made photography popular, it served as the basis for motion pictures. He was a major philanthropist, giving away fortunes to medical and dental research, as well as establishing the Eastman School of Music. He funded the construction of MIT’s second campus on the Charles River, and donated large sums to both the Tuskegee and Hampton universities. He also funded clinics across Europe for the poor.
