“This is the most important aviation development since Lindbergh’s flight. In one fell swoop, we have shrunken the earth.”

Juan Terry Trippe was an American aviator and businessman known for founding Pan American World Airways, the most prominent airline of the 20th century. After learning to fly in the Navy, Trippe returned home after World War I and graduated from Yale. Working as a stock broker, he tapped into his rich friends from Yale to help fund his new airline called Long Island Airways, an air-taxi service for the rich and powerful. Trippe also invested in Colonial Air Transport, which serviced the Caribbean. The company would evolve into Pan Am. Pan Am’s first flight was in 1927, which flew from Florida to Havana. The rest is history, as Trippe’s airliners redefined air travel the world over.
