100 Entrepreneurs Who Changed The World
80. William C. Durant (1861-1947)
“It may be true that you can’t fool all the people all the time, but you can fool enough of them to rule a large country.”
William C Durant was a leading American automotive pioneer, who cofound General Motors and Chevrolet, and developed the system of multi-brand holding companies with various lines of cars. From the lumber yard his grandfather owned to manufacturing Durant horse-drawn carriages in Flint, Michigan, Durant was a hard worker. His company became the number one carriage company in the world. When the industrial era brought motorized power to those carts, Durant didn’t lose a step. He cofounded two automotive giants, General Motors and their subsidiary Chevrolet, and he conceived not only the modern method of manufacturing cars through auto groups, he also the modern day dealership system. Durant heard the public outcry for safer cars, and marketed GM and Chevy’s for their safety features.
