10. Find Affordable Housing

It can be easier said than done; however, but before making the jump to becoming an expat finding affordable housing is key to keeping the bills down in one’s new country. Housing continues to be one of the biggest expenses for expats, and during the first year or more abroad, minimizing the total amount spent on housing can help ensure success for most. Special attention should be paid; however, to not going too low on the cost of housing to avoid living in an inherently unsafe neighborhood or one that will dramatically increase the transportation costs to the workplace or school. Many overseas destinations are friendly to those desiring to ride a bike to work, but it always pays for the prospective expat to do his or her homework.
