It is not uncommon for married couples today to have to worry about helping one or more of their parents (or grandparents as the kids call them) with making ends meet as they themselves hit retirement. Many couples do not necessarily take this financial hit into account when making their family’s financial plan. Before getting surprised with having to take care of Grandma or Grandpa, it’s worth taking some time to have an open discussion with the parents of each spouse to see how they are sitting with regards to preparations for sustaining their lifestyle into retirement.
