4. It is seen as a symbol of freedom and democracy around the world

Not only did the Magna Carta inspire such great documents as the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution, it also inspired the 1948 UN Charter on Human Rights and is seen as a symbol of civil liberties and democracy throughout the world.

Many thinkers described the Magna Carta as the greatest constitutional document of all times– the foundation of the freedom of the individual against the arbitrary authority of the despot. The sealing of the Magna Carta in 1215 was one of the most significant events in world history, since for the first time in history a document limited the power of authoritarian rule.

Through enshrining the Rule of Law, it helped to set in motion wider liberties and freedoms enjoyed by hundreds of millions of people in more than 100 countries today. The Magna Carta is a huge cultural and historic asset not only to Great Britain but across the world.
